TEAM GALA
17th November 2007
Windsor hosted the opening ‘Kath Saunders’ Gala - for swimmers 12yrs and under, at the Magnet pool last weekend, entering two teams of swimmers against competing clubs Slough & Eton Dolphins, Teddington and Reading.
The gala, held in memory of the late Kath Saunders who died suddenly in March 2007 aged 82.
Kath Saunders was the daughter of the co founder of the Club in 1909 Francis G Saunders. She was a lifelong member and a devoted swimming teacher to the children. Her kindness, skills and patience as a teacher poolside helped the majority of Windsor swimmers through the Club and beyond. She herself started swimming in the 1930’s as part of the Windsor Ladies Swimming Club, when she swam in the river in the summer on Tuesday Evenings. She won the County Half Mile swim and her team won the County freestyle relay. In the 1950’s she started helping with the Beginners and continued to take part in races as an adult, however when she beaten by 10yr old Alison Glover in a river race, she decided to stop! She continued to support the river swims by rowing her rescue boat alongside the racers.
Joy Poulter Head of teaching, paid tribute to Kath, as she presented the silver ‘Kath Saunders’ trophy to the winning Team Windsor Blues
