As the eve of our one hundredth birthday year approaches, Windsor Swimming Club is not only reflecting on and honouring its heritage, but also creating its future.
On Saturday 20th September 2008, more than 60 swimmers, parents, teachers and coaches, came together to discuss and contribute to the Next Steps in the Club’s development. Following an introductory DVD to show the lifecycle of a swimmer at WSC compiled by Andy Kaye, one of our parents, Matt Heathcock, Our Head Coach welcomed and set out his vision for the Club for 2009 until 2013, directing focus to the Olympic Games and beyond.
Matt described his vision for the Club as
To have fun in becoming one of the top 3 highly competitive swimming clubs in the region by
Ø Consistently developing quality swimmers of all ages/levels, and
Ø Focusing on a single strategy that is
ü Swimmer driven
ü Coach led
ü Volunteer enabled
The Strategy was summarised in a large visual template and Matt outlined his current thinking and then invited feedback, questions and suggestions from everyone present. These inputs were captured on large sheets of paper around the room and have been taken and built into the Strategy. This visual will now guide our decision-making going forward to ensure that we move towards our vision, step-by-step, day-by-day, week-by-week.
Following on from this, the structure and objectives of the Teaching and Development groups were explained by Joy Poulter (Head of Teaching), Paula McLeod (Head of Junior Coaching) and Matt himself. Alistair Morrison, Chairman, described the important role that Volunteers play in making every aspect of the Club work, introduced current and past parents who have put themselves forward for Committee positions, and invited anyone wishing to help bring the vision to life in the future to place their names on a chart.
The meeting finished with a session where parents could ask any further questions.
To close the meeting Matt showed the footage of Amy McVeigh, one of our Top Squad swimmers, winning the Gold Medal at the National Youth Championships in Sheffield earlier this year – a fantastic achievement for Amy, Matt and the Club.
Please have a look at the Strategy, and discuss your thoughts and input with Matt or any of the Club staff or Committee members.
